Fit Air Intake Question

So I’m wondering if this rather cheap short intake is as worthwhile as the K&N (If I build a small half box like the K&N has to block out the engine air, and just pull the fresh air like the K&N does)

or there’s this on the slightly more expensive side but still not as pricey as the K&N, but it would still need a box built.

I’ve never really done anything with intakes, and so the idea that for around $100 I could gain 5 hp (K&N verifies it for theirs) is very interesting.

I know there are “cold air intakes” that go down to behind the bumper, but when we get typhoons or big rainstorms the water can definitely get sprayed into where that would be sucking air. So if the results are the same then I’d prefer to keep it up and away from the water possibility.

So what does the Hivemind know?

I had a Takeda cold air intake on my CRZ. I highly recommend Takeda products if they make one for your generation Fit. I also recommend a short shifter although I can’t remember at the moment who made the short shifter.

Buy a Cold Air Intake, install one of these inline in the engine bay:

Have the sound and performance bump of a CAI without the worries of sucking water.

Bypass valves install in your intake tract and give you engine another place to pull air if the filter goes under water, keeping the water out of your engine.

That’s the trade off. A better flowing intake means more air which requires more fuel to avoid a lean condition. More fuel means more power.

you’re not going to notice a lawnmower’s worth of power gain.  it’s only at the very top end (near redline at WOT.)  I can think of a long list of better things to spend $100 on.

You wont be able to feel 5 hp. Where k&n is nice is the washable/reusable filter. That alone gets a recommendation from me.

Di dn’t Mighty Car Mods prove a lot of the time there is really no noticeable performance gain from these over a stock airbox ?

I dunno, I agree, a full CAI system is a bad idea if you get a lot of water in your area because of where the filter mounts low behind the bumper.

A POD filter would be OK, but I personally don’t find they’re worth it. A friend had one on his 2006 Honda Accord (4-cyl)...it sounded awesome, but his fuel economy was worse and (he never had it dyno tested) he said there didn’t seem to be any noticeable performance difference with it (he used to autocross it) .

K&N might have ‘verified’ it, but to play the ‘boo Capitalism’ guy for a second, remember, they’re the one selling the filter, so of course they’re going to show you good numbers to attempt to get you to buy it.

Not at all. I’ve had one on every one of my vehicles with a CAI and never had an issue going through deep water/sucking in water.

I’m asking about putting an air filter in line in the engine bay - won’t that just defeat the whole purpose of a CAI?

I dunno, it’s a GE6 Fit. If it did give me a 5hp increase that would be a 5% increase in HP ( which I am dubious that it could actually do) and I think that would be able to be felt. ;)

You’re right about the reusable air filter though. S pending $25-30 for an air filter every time hurts.

Nope.

The way they’re designed they only allow significant air through them if there’s a restriction downstream. So under normal use, your engine will pull it’s air from the CAI. If your filter gets clogged/blocked ( say you run it under water ) it will then pull air from inside the engine bay thanks to it’s internal diaphragm, keeping harm out of your engine. It’s not a filter, it’s a diaphragm that allows air in if your filter gets submerged. https://www.aemintakes.com/air_bypass_valve.htm
